How much will my bathroom renovation cost?

Updated: Feb 13, 2020

This is a common question asked. It is important to work out a budget that suits not only your financial circumstances but also one that suits the value of your home.

Below are three price brackets to give you an idea of what can be expected:

-Budget: $5,000 - $15,000 for a budget or cosmetic renovation of a smaller bathroom using budget materials & fittings.

-Standard: $15,000 - $30,000 for an average sized mid-range bathroom renovation using mid-range materials and fittings.

-Premium: $30,000+ for a high end, premium or luxury bathroom renovation using top of the range materials and fittings.

A bathroom renovation for around $5,000 is doable, but this will generally be cosmetic or involve swapping out a few select items. Spending up to $15,000 will also involve a few compromises, such as keeping all your existing plumbing & electrical services in place. To stay within this budget you will also need to select tiles under the $30 per square metre range - of which you will find plenty of options that are available in a wide range of colours. You will find you will need to stick to standard back to wall toilet and floor mounted vanity to keep costs down.

This tends to be what most people spend, with better tiles and fittings. A larger range of tiles to choose from up to $50 per square metre, and you may be able to stretch your budget to more labour intensive mosaics on a feature wall. You can upgrade to a semi-frameless or frameless shower screen, and choose a more elaborate freestanding bath, and bathroom vanity. In terms of relocating plumbing or electrical services, you can make some changes but keep to minor alterations.

Now this is where you can afford to have fun and be a little adventurous.

In this range you can completely overhaul your bathroom and make major changes to the layout and services and even knock down walls to add more space. Your options open right up to designer vanities - for example, at the moment the elaborate "Hamptons" style is very on trend but can be costly to really get the design just right.

Full height tiling, full feature walls, designer lighting along with endless options with the style of your tiling. Why not get that luxurious bathtub while you are at it!
